Schwabachers Landing: Grand Teton National Park’s Greatest Hidden Gem

Schwabackers LandingThe beavers have been busy this summer at Schwabacher’s Landing in Grand Teton National Park, just north of the town of Moose, WY. A side road off of highway 89 winds down the glacial terraces of the Snake River to this slow-moving wetland which attracts abundant wildlife, including moose, beaver, muskrat, and all manner of songbirds and waterfowl. This summer has seen remarkable beaver activity in particular. On a recent visit with guests, we witnessed five or more beavers in and out of the water, building dams, moving large rocks, and stripping and eating bark from a cottonwood twenty inches in diameter! It is no wonder that biologists commonly say Castor canadensis alters its habitat more than any other mammal- with the exception of Homo erectus, of course.
